The third weekend of August Giethoorn (northern part of Holland) slowly will change from a tourist village into a BluesMecca. Giethoorn is also known as the Venice of the North, almost no streets but lots of waterways. Late in the afternoon the last buses with tourists leave for home and the first musicians park their cars. Many small boats are on their way to the unique waterstage.
Sight-seeingboats are called get-together-boats and take you from cafe to cafe, from band to band. The combination of watery vicinity, the waterstage and the get-together-boats make this festival to what it is: a unique festival. [The Notodden Blues Festival has done it once again. Celebrating its 18th
year of dishing out top notch Blues, the Festival again proved that if
you want to experience a unique Blues experience, this is the one
festival to attend. It may well be the best Blues festival in Europe and
it is certainly one of the best in the world.
Held over four days in early August, the Festival turns the tiny
Norwegian city of Notodden, population 12,000, into a cosmopolitan Blues
center of Europe, drawing over 30,000 fans from all corners of the Blues
world. Wherever you walk in this city, the Blues can be heard and seen
loud and clear. It is hard for Americans to understand just how deep the
Blues run in Norway; there are hundreds of Bluesclubbs, or Blues
societies, throughout the country. Homegrown artists are talented and
interesting, international touring artists are welcomed, and there are
numerous festivals held across the country. The Norwegian people love
their Blues and Notodden is where they gather each August to celebrate
